Miller's Collecting Porcelain Miller's Collecting Porcelain
Bonhams Auctioneers and BBC Antiques Roadshow expert John Sandon looks at the many ways in which porcelain can be collected, dividing the book into collecting by style, by decoration, by maker or country of origin, and by object or shape. Styles and makes covered include Ming, Rococo, Japanese Imari, Meissen, Royal Worcester, Art Nouveau and Deco, Sevres and Limoges. A comprehensive introduction to the invention of porcelain and how it is manufactured is provided, including the factory processes involved in making the items, as well as details of what to look for and where to find it. Colour photographs illustrate the diversity of porcelain available, with feature tint-boxes on collecting information and advice. Fakes and reproductions are uncovered and tips are given on how to care for and display a porcelain collection. This volume should be useful to beginners and established collectors alike, providing the background information and detailed knowledge of the pieces available on the market needed to build a successful porcelain collection.

Verdura Verdura
Few jewelry designers of the 20th century had the flair and creativity of Fulco di Verdura (full name Fulco Santostefano della Cerda, Duke of Verdura). His fascinating career took him from Paris to Los Angeles and eventually New York, where he was patronized by the rich and famous, who found his flamboyant neo-Baroque style exactly what they wanted. Cole Porter and his wife Linda, Marlene Dietrich, and Greta Garbo, among others, were his devoted admirers, as were many of Society's movers and shakers, including the Duchess of Windsor, Diana Vreeland and Mona Bismarck, who not only collected his brilliant confections but were pleased to entertain him at their dinner tables and in their country homes. Patricia Corbett expertly discusses and evaluates Verdura's jewelry designs in this lavish volume, the first monograph on this master jeweler. She has been given access to all Verdura's archives and to many of his surviving patrons in order to recreate both his personal and his professional life. Wonderful colour photography of the jewelry, as well as atmospheric historical photographs of the celebrities who adored Verdura's work, vividly trace his development over more than 25 years of

The Power of Gold The Power of Gold
In this exciting new book, Peter L. Bernstein, who chronicled the evolution of risk in his recent bestseller, Against the Gods, tells the story of history's most coveted, celebrated, and inglorious asset: gold. From the ancient fascinations of Moses and Midas through the modern convulsions caused by the gold standard and its aftermath, gold has led many of its most eager and proud possessors to a bad end. Gold had them, rather than the other way around. And while the same cycle of obsession and desperation may reverberate in today's fast--moving, electronically--driven stock markets, the role of gold in shaping human history is the striking feature of this tumultuous tale. Such is the power of gold. This fascinating account begins with the magical, religious, and artistic qualities of gold and progresses to the invention of coinage, the transformation of gold into money, and the gold standard. The more important gold becomes as money, the more loudly it speaks of power----even more loudly than when it served as an entry to Heaven or a symbol of omnipotence. Ultimately, the book confronts the future of gold in a world where it appears to have been relegated to the periphery of global finance. From the Bible to the Gold Rush era to modern day Fort Knox and beyond, unforgettable characters stride through these pages. Contemplate gold from the diverse perspectives of monarchs and moneyers, potentates and politicians, men of legendary wealth and others of more plebeian beginnings from Asia Minor's King Croesus to Rome's noted speculator Crassus, to Byzantine emperors and humble miners, Venice's Marco Polo and Spain's Francisco Pizarro, to Charlemagne and Charles de Gaulle, Richard I and Richard Nixon, Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill, Britain's economists David Ricardo and John Maynard Keynes, and Christopher Columbus and the Forty--Niners. Perhaps most remarkable are the frantic speculators who pushed gold to USD850.00 an ounce in 1980 just as their counterparts twen

Miniature Books Miniature Books
Miniature books, most of which are less than three inches (76.2mm) tall and some almost too small to see, have delighted readers for centuries. Popular because they were easily carried or concealed, these historic books range from tiny thumb bibles to illustrated nursery rhymes. They can be traced back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, before the invention of printing, when text was handwritten and pictures painted. With the development of the printing press, thinner paper and smaller typefaces, the number of miniature books published increased. Little books served very practical purposes: holding information in easily portable and compact spaces. Nobles, nuns, priests, students and lay persons found it easier to travel with miniature books tucked into pockets or attached to girdles and belts. Painters enjoyed the challenge of making them with extravagant bindings of tortoise shell, leather, sterling silver, embroidery and vellums. Napoleon had a miniature traveling set of Shakespeare's plays. The miniature books found with in this title are drawn from a private collection of over 15,000 books. It is published in association with the Grolier Club, New York.

The Book of Matchbox Labels The Book of Matchbox Labels
The history of the matchbox label provides a fascinating pictorial guide and reference to social history. This book takes the reader from the beginnings of the industry - with its associated hazards - through its golden age in the years leading up to the First World War and on to more modern times. Matches, such a necessity both today and in the past, were also initially a luxury and a curiosity. Their boxes tended to be uniform, so manufacturers did not want to leave the covers blank, and were therefore left with the question: to communicate or decorate? This book details how their response to this problem led to the birth of branding, or what we know today as trademarks. A huge range of illustrations shows just how effective the images they used were. The matchbox became a source of advertising revenue, and this attempt to beautify mundane objects included the depiction of topical and seasonal subjects, historical events, nature, and personalities of the time models, film stars and musicians proved particularly popular. Each country, though, had its own trends, and so some subjects covered such as children's games, humour and folklore, gave great insight into national characters and opinions. The author discusses the importance of imports and exports, and the effects of the increase and decrease in smoking, particularly in the developing markets of Asia, Africa and the Americas. Even today, the matchbox label remains a barometer of social activity and also a means of communication and a source of information.

Furniture for the Dream King Furniture for the Dream King
Anton Possenbacher (1842-1920), cabinet-maker to the Bavarian court in Munich, was head of one of the largest late 19th-century German makers of luxury furnishings. His furniture designs, especially those for King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1871-1886), represent German historicism at its zenith. Possenbacher created almost all the furnishings for the royal apartments at Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neu Schwanstein. Intricately carved and lavishly upholstered in gold brocade and dazzling embroidered pictures, these furnishings are highlights in the sumptuous interiors of Bavarian castles. Made to the specifications of an exacting monarch, these masterpieces of the cabinet-makers craft have lost nothing of their original fascination. Not content with resting on his laurels in Bavaria, Anton Possenbacher also designed for other rulers, such as King Charles I of Romania, for whom he designed an elegant palace library in Bucharest (1887). Possenbacher's clients also included industrialists, merchants and landed gentry, for whose town houses and manors he created entire rooms. This work introduces the full range of furnishings by Anton Possenbacher viewed in their historical context.

Ikora and Myra Glass by WMF Ikora and Myra Glass by WMF
With contemporary advertising and sales catalogues as its sources, this book represents the first exhaustive survey of the Ikora and Myra lines in glass produced between the 1920s and 1950s by the Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik AG (WMF) at Geislingen/ Steige. At the instigation of the then WMF director general, Hugo Debach, WMF had been making high-quality art glass (called Unika pieces, indicating that they were one-of-a-kind) as well as lines in mass-produced art glas (Ikora and Myra). First presented to the public to great acclaim at the Wurttembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart by museum director G. E. Pazaurek, these pieces are now much sought after as valuable collector's items. Ikora and Myra Glass by WMF not only deals exhaustively with the history of this glass but also provides aficionados and collectors of Ikora and Myra glass for the first time with a complete catalogue of WMF products. The availability of this information makes it possible, first, to distinguish from the original later glass made as imitation of WMF glass by rival competitors and, second, to identify accurately each piece of Unika, Ikora or Myra glass.

The Pink Pearl The Pink Pearl
This beautifully illustrated book sets out to tell the story of a collection of about 30,000 pearls, with no rival anywhere in the world, and that of the re-discovery of these pearls. This book sets out to tell her story, and that of the rediscovery of these pearls, while giving a professional nudge in the right direction to this new gem. Mines Mines
Poets' Voices is an international series of books with audio CD's which present collections of poems by significant poets whose work is not available in existing publications. Their poems appear in the original language, together with an English translation on the facing page. With each book, whenever possible, there is a CD recording of the poet reading poems in the collection in the original language and when feasible, in the English translations. Poets' Voices will also feature monographs on key poets about whose lives, works, and influence little is currently available. In Jennifer Maiden's powerful thirteenth collection of poetry she significantly consolidates and expands her literary techniques and ethical explorations. This collection confirms Maiden's consistent belief that poetry is a form of three-dimensional philosophy as concise, voluptuous, and valuable as prose in reaching new horizons in our perceptions of being and in developing our skills in humanity and survival. Jennifer Maiden has won both the NSW and Victorian Premiers' Prize for poetry as well as many other awards. In February 1999, she was awarded the F.A.W. Christopher Brennan Prize for a lifetime of achievement in literature.

The Art and Life of Weaver Hawkins The Art and Life of Weaver Hawkins
Some of the most individual and symbolic paintings produced in Australia were those of Harold Frederick Weaver Hawkins (1893-1977). English-born, Hawkins arrived in Australia in 1935 with a background very different to that of his comtemporaries. And yet until his death in 1977 he remained a unique and stimulating artistic influence on Australian art, a fact which has been increasingly recognized. Disabled by war injuries but persistent in pursuit of his creativity, Hawkins studied at the Westminster School of Art and was a close friend of the English painters David Jones and Frank Medworth. Hawkins exhibited etchings and watercolours in London prior to living in both France and Malta, and then emigrating to Australia. With its stylized abstractions, hard and stirring colours and accents of light and movement, Hawkins' work was initially misunderstood in Australia although he gained acclaim for his lectures in art. Strong, vigorous and disciplined, Hawkin's paintings were very much considered to be a generalized religon of makind and his work focused on fighting for the humanizing values of society. This book examines his art and vision.
